Awaken, My Love

I will never be the same. Since the end of May, I have been reading, researching, listening, and re-learning our American history. The real history. Daddy is showing me documentaries and movies based on actual events. They are hard to watch. Uncomfortable to hear. The lessons and takeaways haunt my dreams and leave me with headaches. But it’s all crucial to my growth and understanding.

Take a breath. I will never be the same.

Babygirl, right now you are 13-months-old, and something big is happening. The chain of events from the senseless murders of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd, to the malicious and intentional bullshit that came from Amy Cooper have really pulled back the curtain of racial injustice and police brutality - and it has exposed many of us (me included) to how ignorant and blind we are to the suffering of Black Americans. As a citizen of this corrupt and unjust nation, I must stay conscious and vigilant to show up and challenge racism.

A re-education is necessary. And so I promise to actively raise you as a co-conspirator, to help us all lead more equitably and be people who help create a more just world.
